New Opera 101

On January 27 and 28, 2012, Tapestry New Opera will offer a two day event for singers and collaborative pianists. Managing Artistic Director Wayne Strongman will be joined by a panel of esteemed colleagues for the Master Class and Workshop components. They will discuss the role of singers and pianists in the process of creating, developing and producing new opera. Each duo will be coached by the clinicians in an assigned aria from the Tapestry Songbook – a library of produced operas from Tapestry’s 32 year history. Participants may be given the opportunity to perform on the evening of Saturday January 28, in the second annual concert of The Tapestry Songbook, which is open to the public.

  • New Opera 101 is intended not only as a tool for the growth of artists but as a way for Tapestry to discover emerging talent.
  • Applications are available online with submissions due in the Tapestry offices on Monday December 12, 2011.
  • Applicants must each submit an application form, two letters of recommendation, a CD of two contemporary vocal works, one of which must be in English, and an application fee of $15 payable by cheque, Visa, Mastercard or cash.
  • A singer and a collaborative pianist, both applying, may jointly submit one CD.
  • Successful applicants will be notified by email on December 16, 2011.
  • Each participant will be assigned a aria from the Tapestry Songbook. Music will be sent upon receipt of a program fee of $175. Program fees are due on December 21, 2011.
  • New Opera 101 participants will receive free admission to The Tapestry Songbook concert on January 28, 2012. Otherwise, tickets are available for $25.
  • A limited number of auditors will be admitted to the program at a cost of $60 for Friday or $100 for both days and The Tapestry Songbook concert.
