Our Shadow…Not a Radio Drama from the 30's…

Tapestry presents The Shadow May 21-30, 2009

So…some people have been asking if Tapestry’s upcoming world premiere The Shadow, by Alex Poch-Goldin & Omar Daniel, is the operatic version of the famous radio drama from the 1930’s. It is not. But we promise it will still be awesome.

Tapestry’s production tells the story of Raoul a humble postman in early 20th Century Barcelona who assumes the identity of a wealthy suitor to win a woman’s love. Raoul just doesn’t know when to quit and as he spirals deeper into debt he is haunted by this very creepy character – the Shadow, who is based on traditional Spanish money collectors.

And there are ‘Shadow-like’ characters at work in Spain today. Alex Poch-Goldin recently found a news item about “El Cobrador del Frac”, (“The Debt Collector in Top Hat in Tails”)… “a company which specializes in sending men dressed like extras from a 1930s Fred Astaire movie to humiliate debtors into paying up. Its business is booming.” Wow. Apparently Spaniards really go for the drama. I wonder how those theatrics would go over in Canada. Click here or here to read more about these wacky debt collectors.

Tapestry’s world premiere of The Shadow runs May 21-30, 2009 at the Berkeley Street Theatre, Downstairs
