Artistic Development

Tapestry remains the only company exclusively dedicated to creating and developing new operas and to producing a full season of new work annually.  We strive to make our development of new operas the best in the world and are producing exceptional work by nurturing the artists within collaborative work environments.  Many of Tapestry’s resident New Work Studio Company members have become the go-to talent for performing and producing new opera in Canada. We remain committed to our artists and to being the leader in new opera creation with the help from our partners and supporters.

Outreach and Education

Since 2001, outreach and education initiatives have been a priority portfolio for Tapestry and since 2006 we have focused on community-based programming for youth at risk, after school, in class and during summer sessions. Our core programme – INside Opera – brings together a creative team (librettist, composer and dramaturge) with a group of young participants to engage in the creation and performance of a brand new piece of opera or music theatre. Tapestry currently provides the INside Opera programme to youth participants in diverse neighbourhoods in Toronto with high population density and poverty.   Former Tapestry Chair and President, Sylvia Morawetz, championed the effort to launch this program and today, we honour all education and outreach programs in her memory.

International Partnerships

In 2009, we engaged in our first international Composer-Librettist Laboratory (LibLab) bringing two composers and one librettist from Scottish Opera to team up with 3 established Tapestry creators.  Since then, Managing Artistic Director Wayne Strongman has been working to strengthen partnerships with like-minded companies and build on new opportunities which include co-producing, artist commissioning and programming and require travel and inviting artists to visit Tapestry.

Corporate Sponsorship and Donations

Throughout Tapestry’s rich history, corporate partnerships have played an integral role in Tapestry’s successes. From sponsoring specific productions, performances and performing artists to gala celebrations, special events and the education and outreach programs, corporate partners have been invaluable members of the Tapestry team.
